depends on what the measurements of the side of the barn are.

he can go out 25 feet and across 50 feet, using the barn as the other 50 foot side, provided the barn is that big. How big is the side of the barn???

This homework problem has been around for ages. I had it when I was in school, my kids had it when they were in fifth grade, and in a couple of years, my grandkids are going to get it. I would not be surprised if my grandfather had it in the 19th century.
The max area is a rectangle twice as wide as it is deep. This assumes the barn side is half as long as the fencing.
